For most dieters being hungry is key to their feelings of success on a diet. If you’re hungry, it must be working, right? You are doing the right thing and depriving yourself of food you want so that’s got to be a good thing, yes?
Actually, no! It’s not. Hunger is the enemy of dieting. You can kid yourself for a while that skipping meals or going without food or eating less than you want to will help you lose weight. But it won’t. Far more likely it’ll cause you to break your diet, fall off the wagon, overeat to compensate for all the hunger pangs and sense of deprivation and fill you with self loathing and body hatred.
Phew! Quite a reverse of the effect you were after isn’t it? The thing with Paleo and the thing that I’ve struggled to accept all these months I’ve been trying to do it is that YOU DON’T EVER HAVE TO BE HUNGRY!
Eat what you need
This is a diet, if diet it can be called, where you can eat what you need. Are in fact encouraged to. You don’t skip meals or do without food. You eat what your body needs and if you do it correctly, you won’t feel hungry or want to eat between meals.
Now as I’ve said before, not all hunger is real. Sometimes we just have what I call “mouth” hunger, when you just want the taste of something. Then there’s boredom hunger. Or there’s the it’s time to eat so I’ll eat hunger. Listening to your body when you’ve been overweight most of your life is tough because you’ve kind of lost touch with genuine hunger and real body needs.
Stick to mealtimes
This is probably why the one thing nearly ever diet expert/guru/coach agrees on is that you must start the day with a decent breakfast. And preferably follow it with two other main meals. Eating at mealtimes and eating properly, ie a nice full filling satisfying and enjoying meal is the way to go. Grazing won’t work for dieters! It’s too much of an excuse; too easy to lose control. Sure you should snack occasionally if you want to but on Paleo, try to make it a high-protein snack, not a sugary one.
Paleo meals are filling and gorgeous and because of this, if you follow Paleo correctly you shouldn’t ever feel hungry but you should lose weight!
So, how I am doing? Well last week I was away – in Portmeirion again. I don’t announce or reveal I’m away or going away for the same reason the Prime Minister, Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family don’t announce their trips. Security. Suffice to say I had a good time and I went completely off Paleo piste, sigh…
Since returning I’ve tried to climb back on the wagon but I keep feeling hungry and I know this is because I ate carbs while I was away and that’s set the craving for them off again. If you give in to this craving, it won’t ever go away! It’s a bully that can’t be appeased. The more you give in, the more it demands you eat! Easiest way is not to have any. I did enjoy imbibing a few carb calories last week, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t. I am human and I DO miss my carbs, no point pretending otherwise.
But I feel better back on Paleo and the hunger pangs will go once my body readjusts back to high protein and fat with low or no sugar.
Cheese and wine
Tis fortunate I’m not much of a drinker so I can easily lay off the wine. And the cheese fast continues to go brilliantly well! I don’t miss it at all. Didn’t even have any last week when I was away. Didn’t feel the need to. Now then if only I could do that with cake and other sugary confections! Could I give up sweets entirely and chocolate? I can do without alcohol most of the time. Ditto cheese. If I could cut all sweetie stuff out my diet, I think I could just eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted provided there was little or no alcohol, no cheese and no sweets.
But not yet! It’s my birthday a week today and if you feel the urge to get me something big and expensive, don’t bother resisting. Go right ahead. I shall be having cake and champagne for there are limits to anyone’s willpower and mine has many limits. Easter follows a few weeks later and I shall be having a very expensive dark chocolate Easter egg because you can’t ask too much of your willpower. That wouldn’t be fair. But after all that AFTER THAT I shall be trying to add chocolate, sweets, cakes and pastries to my cheese fast. For I shall be continuing with the cheese fast after Lent as it’s been going so well and cheese has always been one of my “things”. If I can drop dairy too, I shall. And I need to. I’m not making much progress right now if truth be told and I need to do something else to make a breakthrough.
But not quite yet! If you have been, thanks for reading and see you later this week or next week, depending on how I feel!
