I am now back on the Paleo regime 100% – or as close to 100% as I can ever get with Paleo. I still have milk in my tea and coffee though it’s full-fat now, not skimmed, and I still take a few sprinkles of sugar. But the toast, cake, biscuits and crisps are now all firmly back off the menu.
I feel so much better being back on high protein. As I said last week, I had no choice with a broken cooker than to eat easy meals such as sandwiches and toast. I knew it was temporary and I’d just returned from a holiday where free cream teas every day were part of the deal. But I felt horrible eating all that carb and sugar.
Carb cravings
Seemed to me the more carb I ate, the more I craved it. I was always hungry; or always craving another piece of cake or another scone, bar of chocolate or slice of toast. Biscuits too never satisfied. Nothing did. I’ve no idea of the chemistry involved in this and I make no claims for this as a scientific study but… my instincts tell me that carbs are addictive if only slightly and you’re always left wanting more. It’s not like that with protein. It really isn’t. You eat what you need then get on with your life and often don’t notice a mealtime has passed. Eating carbs I lived for mealtimes and often snacked in between.
Didn’t gain weight
But I didn’t gain weight; in fact, I still lost a bit. Not much but it’s going in right direction. So how come? I suspect it’s because after dieting for most of the year and losing two stone now (28lbs/13 kilos) my appetite has naturally shrunk. I’m also more naturally active. The diet has saved me from myself. It’s always a very tricky moment when you let yourself off the leash. Will you ever go back on? Thus yoyo dieting seems inevitable. Not for me this time though because I genuinely prefer Paleo eating and very much welcome its return in my life.
With my cooker now fixed thanks to a new element that cost me £11 on the internet, I went a bit mad yesterday and spent the day cooking. My ‘fridge is now full of lovely cooked protein so I need not worry about reaching for bread again if I feel hungry.
Sweden first Western nation to reject low-fat
Delighted to report that Sweden is the first Western nation to endorse my kind of diet/eating. It’s finally realised that the low-fat dogma we’ve been wedded to for far too long is just that – dogma.
It doesn’t work. It’s based on faulty science and it makes dieters miserable. How long before other nations follow suit? Here in the UK it took till as recently as 2009 for the official advice to eat only two eggs a week to be changed to eat as many as you like! The cholesterol in eggs is NOT harmful to the human body; quite the opposite.
Science often purports to be values free but it’s not. Often the values come first and the science is made to fit. The Swedes have the right idea on this.
Have a great Monday and a good week.
