Well this is now day 3 of my new 5:2 regime doing it the Paleo way. And most bizarre thing has happened. My appetite has shrunk! Yesterday I was tempted to do two fasting days side by side – which is another version of 5:2 that some follow. But I made myself eat – ha! Listen to that. I made myself eat!
Why? Well my theory is the hot humid weather we’re having in the UK right now zaps my appetite. Just want to be well hydrated with sugar-free liquids of some kind. OR… is it the new 5:2 regime? I have heard some say they don’t go mad on their not fasting days. And in fact many on the regime cut back about ten per cent of what they used to eat on normal eating days. We’ll see. Tomorrow is my next ‘2’ day. Just hope my appetite remains sluggish.
Ice in the sun
We all like a little ice in the sun don’t we? Or out of the sun really which is where most of us should be right now. Ever tried making your own iced coffee? It’s delicious, it’s Paleo and it’s infinitely superior to the £3/$5/€4 iced coffees they serve in coffee chains.
So here’s my personally-developed recipe for making delicious, refreshing, iced coffee. You can make it at home or if you want to make yourself really popular with your colleagues, make it at work if you have a kitchen. Or take a pitcher in.
Make a pot of very strong coffee. Filter or whichever kind you use at home. Don’t even THINK about doing this with instant. Let it go completely cold. When cold, add to it thick double cream and swoosh it about a bit. You can make it in a flask but that can give it a bit of a metallic flavour so a plastic container with a lid is best if you have it.
Chill in the ‘fridge. Serve in high ball glasses over several large chunks of ice.
You can add ice-cream to it instead of cream but the Paleo way is to go with cream, not ice-cream because the latter has sugar in it and also lots of chemicals. Though if you make homemade ice-cream, that will be fine. There is I believe a high-protein version of ice-cream sold in some health food shops. If you can get hold of some, a dollop of that as a finishing flourish will go down very nicely.
If you’re not going Paleo or even if you are, a few flakes of very dark chocolate – at least 70% proof – sprinkled over the top makes this a very special Summer treat that will sustain you long into the coming cold dark Winter months.
Today I’ll be mostly eating high-protein foods to sustain me for the fast that comes tomorrow. I fear I may have miscalculated my calories for Monday, my first fasting day. Think I came in nearer to 600 calories than the required 500 for a woman on 5:2. No, I don’t know why women are allowed fewer calories on 5:2 than men. Same old same old. Women always get less. Even though dieting is easier for many men than it is for us. Alls most of them need do is GIVE UP THE BEER!!!! Those bulging guts would just disappear. I wish I drank beer! Cos then I too could make my gut go but I don’t so I can’t.
Have a good midweek. Wish me luck for tomorrow for tomorrow I fast again!
